Why Does Skin Lose Firmness?
Similar to a spring that has lost its tension, aging skin has also lost some of its tension, or firmness. This looseness, often referred to as skin laxity, is the cause of skin droop, jowls, 'turkey neck", arm waddle and a host of other conditions that have equally unattractive nicknames. Collagen, which is the basic building block of the skin, is compact and dense in young skin. Age and environmental stresses cause the collagen strands to begin to unravel. As we age, natural replacement of collagen that has degraded and disintegrated slows down. It's an inescapable part of growing older.

Tightening Skin through Heat
The discovery of tightening effects through the use of lasers and thermal heating meant that a controlled delivery system of heat could cause the skin to essentially retighten. The process of skin tightening based on an adequate delivery of this heat to the deeper tissues without harming the surface tissue was the challenge.
Basic Types of Heat-Induced Skin Tightening Devices
Thermage was the initial device dedicated to skin tightening. The heat delivery with Thermage is accomplished with radio frequency which creates heat from the friction of deeper skin cells reacting to the frequency changes. (Rubbing your hands together briskly will cause heat in a similar fashion.) Surface skin is protected by a cryogen spray that lowers the epidermal tissue and keeps it from being adversely affected.
The StarLux Deep IR Skin Tightening System uses infrared light to produce heat in the deep dermis. Many of you are familiar with infrared light as many pain-relieving heat devices use infrared light. to cause deep heating in a sore or injured muscle. The depth of the heat is controlled with selectable depths of 1 to 3 mm. Thinner skin does not receive too much heat with the shallower heat penetration yet thicker skin areas can tolerate and benefit from the deeper penetration of 3 mm.
Maureen Murphy became an actress at age 40.
"It was the result of a midlife crisis," Murphy said. "Instead of getting a convertible or having an affair, I became an actress."
Murphy is now 52, but she doesn't look her age, because she works at it.
The latest is a pulsed light system called the Starlux IR.
"The Starlux IR fractional device is a very unique technology," says Dr. David Vasily ... "improvements can be seen for up to two years."
The Starlux IR is FDA approved for deep tissue heating. In fact, this fractional technology is also showing promise in tightening tummies, stretch marks, and loose areas of skin under the arm.
Patented Fractional Technology
This unique Fractional approach, which preserves the integrity of the epidermis and upper dermis, is possible because of the extra cooling capacity.
The coagulated areas are replaced with regenerated healthy tissue during the healing process, leading to a tighter, smoother skin appearance.
The Lux DeepIR Skin Tightening System
Deep IR infrared light is delivered in a pattern of evenly spaced light columns. Depth of these beams can be up to 3 mm reaching into the deep dermis. Areas around each beamare unaffected and this helps prevent overheating. These same untreated areas assist in the
regrowth of new collagen to promote quicker response.

Contact Cooling for Safety and Comfort
The LuxIR has several additional safety features, including a Contact Sensor attached to the handpiece tip, which will not allow pulsing until the handpiece window is in full contact with the skin. Once in contact, the LuxIR delivers 3-Stage Contact Cooling – before, during, and after each pulse – with the handpiece sapphire tip cooled down to 5º C. This special cooling provides a high level of skin protection and comfort.
