Appearance Matters – How Looks are Linked to Work Value

“I’m older than many of my colleagues and not retiring anytime soon. I know appearance matters but I don’t want to do anything drastic. How can I project a more energetic image and not stand out because I’m the obvious ‘senior’ in the office?”

More people can relate to you than you can imagine. Baby boomers are aging but working as hard as ever. And with the economy in its current state, they’re remaining in their jobs and competing with younger coworkers. A Newsweek poll informed us that looks are valued over education in the workplace (though not over confidence or experience).

So much for the not-so-good news, the great news is that there is a wealth of appearance-boosting nonsurgical options that will keep your face looking fresh and your incredibly valuable confidence as high as it should be. In a nutshell, this is an ideal time to be maturing!

The first step is a neurotoxin such as Botox or its newer cousins, Dysport, Daxxify, or Xeomin, to smooth those parallel lines between your brows that make you look tired and cranky at work (even when you’re not). Neurotoxins can also minimize crow’s feet, lift a drooping mouth, and smooth vertical bands on your neck. Injectable fillers, such as Juvederm, Sculptra, and Radiesse work their subtle magic to restore lost volume at cheeks, temples, lips and around the mouth, and under the eyes – all giveaways of aging.

Want a bigger difference? Look to skin tightening and resurfacing devices: Ulthera, Ellacor, and Genius. Thermage for Eyes is the only treatment of its kind to reduce hooding and eyelid crepiness.

To keep your skin in its best condition, periodic IPLs (referred to by different terms such as Intense Pulsed Light, Broadband Light, or Photo Facials) will reduce and sometimes completely remove age spots, freckles, and broken capillaries and simultaneously increase collagen production.

And don’t forget the serious benefits of skin care products! Take a look at the top 3 Skin Care Heroes

Hero # 1 – Sun Protection

Sunscreen and Sunblock are your BFF. The sun’s ultraviolet rays damage skin on the surface and beneath the surface. Unprotected skin gets spotty, wrinkled, and later rewards you with actinic keratosis, deep hyperpigmentation, and sometimes skin cancer.

Hero # 2 – Exfoliation

Step up the Exfoliation Game. Retinoids are the big daddy, but not everyone can get over the adjustment hump. There are wonderfully kind retinols which boost skin cell turnover to keep your face  looking fresh, clear and smooth.

Hero #3 – Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant and provides production against free radicals…the little munchkins that cause metal to rust. Fight them with a C serum.

Your work experience is uniquely yours. But I see helping you feel your best about your appearance and increasing your self-confidence as my job. It’s what drew me to this profession and what keeps me coming to work.
