Can Microneedling Improve My Skin Tone?

Woman with clear skin following micrneedling procedureYes, it can. Microneedling is an excellent alternative to laser skin resurfacing that can improve fine lines, acne scars, wrinkles, trauma scars, loss of skin volume, and your skin’s color and tone. It is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that requires little downtime.

At Rebecca Fitzgerald Dermatology, board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald and her team have decades of experience helping patients achieve clear, beautiful skin. She is proud to offer the SkinPen®, the only-FDA approved microneedling device of its type. Read on to learn about how our staff can use the SkinPen® microneedling system to improve your skin tone and give you a revitalized, youthful look.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, creates microscopic wounds in your skin to crank up your body’s production of collagen and elastin. Those two substances are what keep your skin firm, clear, and wrinkle-free. They also help heal your skin of injuries. As you enter your mid-20s, your body produces about 1 percent less collagen per year. This is what causes your skin to start to age.

By creating microscopic wounds in your skin, microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin production as your skin tries to heal those injuries. But that collagen and elastin will also correct the blemishes you want to treat.

Microneedling can address issues such as:

  • Fine lines
  • Acne scars
  • Wrinkles
  • Trauma scars
  • Loss of skin volume
  • Skin discoloration

The SkinPen® device uses disposable, sterile cartridges of 12 microscopic needles each. Depending on your needs, one of our specialty team members will alter the depth to which the needles will penetrate.

How Can Microneedling Improve My Skin Tone?

In addition to stimulating the production of collagen and elastin to correct your skin blemishes, the tiny channels created by the SkinPen® allow for topical gels, creams, and serums to penetrate deeper into your skin and be absorbed more effectively.

Those tiny channels also allow a Rebecca Fitzgerald Dermatology physician or nurse practitioner to treat your skin with platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. PRP is a component of blood. As part of your treatment, one of our specialty team members will draw a small amount of your blood. Then, the blood will be put through a centrifuge to separate the plasma. The PRP is then applied to the treatment area. It will stimulate further collagen production, help your skin heal more quickly, and improve your results.

Microneedling Procedure

SkinPen microneedling device Your microneedling procedure will begin with a physician or nurse practitioner applying a topical numbing cream to the treatment area. Then, they’ll start applying the SkinPen® device to your face. Your session will last about half an hour. You may experience a day or two of mild redness afterward, but you won’t require any downtime.

Dr. Fitzgerald typically recommends a series of three treatments spaced about a month apart. For severe discoloration, you may need six to eight appointments.
