We gals love lipstick, right?
But did you ever consider that lipstick might be damaging the delicate skin of your lips?
Long ago, makeup and lipstick were flat-out toxic – lead was a basic ingredient back in the days of the Egyptians and it makes you wonder if that had anything to do with the average lifespan!
From WebMD “…Over the centuries, women used burnt matches to darken their eyes, berries to stain their lips and young boys’ urine to fade their freckles. They even swallowed ox blood in some misguided attempt to improve their complexions.
Women throughout history put their health at risk with many of their homemade cosmetics. In some cultures, for example, women used arsenic, lead, mercury, and even leeches to give themselves the pale appearance deemed beautiful in the old days”
For a long time, even in our modern times, lead was prevalent in paint – and lipstick! The goal was to eliminate lipstick lead levels, and they are down – but actually some are UP from 2007.
By the way, we aren’t advocating that you toss your lipsticks if they are on the hit list (often it is color-specific as to which category they end up in). But being aware is always a good thing and if you’ve got kids, hyperaware never hurts.
Likewise, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is keeping on track to push for no lead (any level of exposure has a toxic effect on infants and small kids. If your little one is playing “dress up” with your cosmetics, check out their list for safe play.
Speaking of lipstick takes you to the issue of lips in general. Did you know you can get a lip enhancement without actually injecting it into the lip itself? You have to see Dr. Fitzgerald’s technique to “get it” – but once you do, you’ll be surprised at how lip augmentation has taken a whole new path!
