What Is a Cosmelan Peel?

If you experience melasma, hyperpigmentation, freckles, acne scars, or dark spots from sun exposure, a Cosmelan peel may be the perfect solution to restore your skin’s youthful tone and texture.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald offers the most advanced and effective skin treatments available today. She has been providing cosmetic dermatology services to patients throughout the Los Angeles area for more than two decades. She will work with you to tailor a treatment plan that will keep your skin looking vibrant and healthy for years to come.

What Is the Cosmelan Peel Process?

A Cosmelan peel is an ideal way to restore your skin to a natural, more visibly appealing state. Because Cosmelan is a depigmentation agent, the Cosmelan mask is provided by licensed estheticians or dermatologists in a professional clinic environment.

After the skin is properly scrubbed clean of dead skin cells and naturally occurring debris, the Cosmelan mask is applied evenly to the face and left to set for approximately four hours. Some patients will be required to leave the mask on for a longer setting time, but usually no longer than eight hours. Once the application is complete, you can return home. You will be advised not to touch the mask until it is time to remove it.

Part 2 – Home Treatment for Better Skin

At home, and after the specified length of time, you may wash the mask off with cool water. A rejuvenating cream like Mesoestetic Hydra-Vital Factor K is then applied, revitalizing the skin with soothing antioxidants and amino acids that work together, ensuring proper skin elasticity and moisture.

In the days following the application of the first mask, you will be using additional products to help reinforce the results from the original Cosmelan peel, although a second treatment may still be required for optimal results. Consistent use of the products and sun protection are key to achieving and maintaining good results.

Beautiful Skin with Cosmelan

Over time, usually a period of weeks or months, the “co-work” of the Cosmelan peel and the home products works from beneath the skin to reduce the overproduction of melanin, thereby reducing visible discoloration. Because the system works directly at the source beneath the skin, it benefits both men and women equally. This makes the Cosmelan peel an excellent choice for individuals looking to improve on the look of their skin.

What Other Treatment Options Can Address Discolored Skin?

There are additional treatments for pigmentation and they may be the precise option for your problems. These options can include:

Dr. Fitzgerald will assess your condition and determine which treatment or combination of procedures is best for your unique needs.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation and melasma appear as dark discolorations on the skin, typically on the face, but occasionally on the neck as well. Both conditions are caused by an overproduction of melanin, the natural pigment that determines the color of a person’s skin. Melanin is also responsible for freckles and a variety of blemishes on the face, including acne scars and unsightly sun spots.

When melanin rushes to one area, it can make your skin look uneven by creating dark brown patches akin to coffee stains, requiring heavy applications of makeup on a daily basis. Concealing these blotchy areas with makeup can be time-consuming and costly, making chemical peels more permanent options for individuals looking to improve their skin.

For men, the problem of hyperpigmentation stays front and center as there are few concealing products that don’t look like makeup.
