Minimally invasive, nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatments are an effective way to reverse the signs of aging and take years off of your appearance. Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald offers a wide range of dermal fillers that can achieve long-lasting, youthful-looking results. One of our most popular fillers is Juvederm®.
Juvederm® – the softest of the hyaluronic acid fillers – is derived from a natural substance which is found throughout the human body. Since it is so similar to your own tissue, there is no need for a sensitivity test.
The treatment helps to “fill out” and smooth away lines or wrinkles. It can also be used to improve the appearance of acne scars and enhance the lip size and shape. Results are immediate with minimal recovery time. Juvederm is the most frequently chosen injectable filler for the lips because of its smooth, soft gel formula.
You can find out whether Juvederm is right for you and receive individualized treatment recommendations by speaking with Dr. Fitzgerald in person. Please call 323-464-8046 today to schedule a consultation at our Los Angeles cosmetic dermatology office.

What Areas Will Juvederm Improve?
Juvederm can be used to address a variety of aesthetic concerns, including:
- Lip borders, vertical lip lines and wrinkles
- Corners of the mouth (drooping corners are uplifted)
- Superficial forehead lines and crow’s feet
- Thinning lips (for increased volume – referred to as lip augmentation)
- Deep folds on the sides of the mouth (nasolabial folds)
- Marionette lines
- Earlobes
Juvederm Options We Offer
Fillers aren’t a “one size fits all” solution. Dr. Fitzgerald chooses different fillers for different areas of the face because no single filler is ideal for all areas. Facial anatomy, where you are on the aging spectrum, skin thickness and elasticity, levels of volume loss, your unique facial expression movements – all these factors are considered when making the choice of which fillers are most appropriate for you as an individual.
Juvederm’s four formulas are all designed to give you the best results in the areas they have been developed for:
- Juvederm XC (lines and folds)
- Juvederm Voluma (cheeks)
- Juvederm Volbella (lips and lip lines)
- Juvederm Vollure XC (moderate to severe lines in the mid face)
Dr. Fitzgerald offers all of these formulas, allowing her to address a wide range of aesthetic goals, such as treating lips, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, adding volume to cheeks or providing structural support for various corrections. Dr. Fitzgerald will choose the perfect formula (or combination of formulas) that best fits your skin’s correction needs. She will also discuss the new "needleless" microcannula injection technique.
Juvederm Voluma
Voluma™ is the newest product recently released by Allergan, the makers of Juvederm and BOTOX® Cosmetic. Voluma has set the stage to provide instant volume to any age patient. Getting a natural-looking and natural-feeling mid face volume restoration is now possible in a single appointment.
The first of its kind, Juvederm® VOLUMA™ is a hyaluronic acid facial filler specifically made to restore age-related volume loss in the mid-face (the cheeks, cheekbones and around the chin). Voluma uses hyaluronic acid, a sugar that occurs naturally in your skin, to instantly restore lost facial volume in the cheeks and contour the chin.
Voluma also combines with collagen and elastin to improve skin structure and elasticity, creating a smooth, natural look. The results are instant, natural looking and can last 18 to 24 months. Plus there’s no downtime – most people resume normal activities immediately.
Treatments with Dr. Fitzgerald:
- Give a subtle lift
- Help restore contour for up to 2 years
- Take years off your appearance
- Are minimally invasive (nonsurgical) with almost no downtime
- Contain skin-friendly modified hyaluronic acid (HA)
Patient of Dr. Fitzgerald
Because mid-face volume loss creates a need for a fairly abundant amount of product, other dermal fillers that typically last 6 to 9 months are not as cost-effective since repeat treatments are needed. That is why we are all excited by Voluma’s longer lasting effects.
“Ideally, anyone who is concerned with the inevitability of future volume loss will begin early and only require small amounts of volume correction periodically. Little bits of help all along the way eliminate more major corrections later on. But…when volume loss has already become an apparent issue, Voluma is the absolute best ‘right now’ corrective volume filler available.” Dr. Fitzgerald
Mid-Facial Volume that’s Age-Appropriate
Voluma will work for any patient over the age of 21. For both volume augmentation and volume restoration, this is an ideal and instantly gratifying injectable product.
Voluma is similar to the Juvederm we are used to, except it is a more robust filler and holds shape more firmly. These qualities make it perfect for:
- Cheekbone accentuation
- Cheek pad fill
- Chin area augmentation
No other long term instant filler can provide these same effects while retaining a comparable level of soft and natural feeling.

A Defining Filler for Men
Although fillers have traditionally been embraced more readily by women, Dr. Fitzgerald feels that Voluma is the second injectable volume product that is equally attuned to men’s concerns. Men have long benefited from the capabilities of Sculptra. Now Voluma can instantly create or recreate facial contours to add desired visual strength and definition to a man’s more masculine appearance.
Placement with Microcannula, not Needles
Voluma can be placed with a smooth-tipped microcannula, making the procedure comfortable while minimizing the potential for bruising. Microcannulas are flexible and rounded at the tip. The design allows the Voluma gel to flow very smoothly and eliminates the small injuries to underlying tissue that is inherent to needles.
Dr Fitzgerald was a pioneer in the use of microcannulas when they were first introduced and is a widely consulted expert for this preferred injection technique.
Juvederm Volbella
Juvéderm Volbella® is a newer formulation of filler that is considered to be the ideal Juvederm option for the lips, lines around the mouth, and additional lip area volume.
As women, we are all especially aware of our lips, our smile, and our teeth. If we have a pretty smile, we feel so much more confident. But the full lips we start out with tend to both shrink and lose definition with age.
Volume loss of the lip body and loss of deeper structural tissue support around the mouth make our lips appear thinner and smaller, opening the door to lip wrinkles. Further flattening of the philtral columns reduces the Cupid’s bow, which also detracts from the desired pretty lip shape that has become a defining characteristic of femininity.
Volbella is designed to:
- Add lip volume
- Soften lip lines
- Correct downward mouth corners
- Reshape philtral columns
How are Lip Lines Formed?
Lines above the lips, often called smoker’s lines or lipstick lines, have long been a source of frustration for many women. The “way” you speak, combined with the natural loss of collagen and support, can create multiple lines and increased line depth. Women who tend to purse their lips when speaking generally have the most lines (aside from women who smoke).
Filling these various depth and nonlinear radial lip lines has always been challenging for physicians since the lines are not straight, but needles are. Dr. Fitzgerald’s specialty techniques for fillers used around the mouth make the most of volume correction as well as individual line smoothing.
How Long will Volbella Last?
Volbella is a soft, smooth gel that can last up to 12 months. The special Vycross® gel combination makes this filler one of the smoothest available. Your personal metabolism, intensity of lip movement and your age will all have an impact on actual longevity.
Juvederm Vollure XC
The new Juvederm Vollure XC formula is highly effective at improving the appearance of laugh lines, marionette lines and horizontal chin lines. Clinical studies show that this hyaluronic acid gel filler can provide results that last up to 18 months.
Laugh lines and marionette lines are visible lines that appear around your nose and mouth when your face is at rest. These lines occur as your skin loses hyaluronic acid and collagen, both of which give your skin its structure.
Juvederm uses their patented Vycross® technology to blend different molecule weights to achieve a particularly smooth result. Vycross cross-linking makes the fillers more malleable and easier to inject, so your treatment is easier and the outcome is even more natural-looking. Vollure’s longevity means you can enjoy the correction for a considerably longer time than can be achieved with other fillers. Clinical study results of 18 months are based on optimal correction. Results may vary.
Juvederm Pre-Treatment Guidelines
Make sure to avoid use of the following items for 10-14 days prior to your Juvederm injections:
- Aspirin
- Pain relievers (Tylenol is okay)
- Coumadin (get primary physician approval first)
- Fish oil
- Glucosamine
- Ginko biloba
- Vitamin E
- Exotic or herbal supplements
If you’ve ever had a cold sore, let our staff know and we will write you a prescription for Valtrex. If your primary physician has advised you to take aspirin for any reason, make sure you let our staff know during your consultation.
We recommend that you avoid eating right after treatments around the mouth. Letting the product “settle” for a few hours will give you the best results. Therefore, it is a good idea to drink water and eat a small stack before arriving.
Juvederm Post-Treatment Recommendations
In order to achieve the best possible results, make sure to follow these post-treatment guidelines:
- Don’t drink alcohol for 24 hours after treatment
- No increased blood pressure (i.e. sauna, hot tub, exercise, cardio) for 4 hours post treatment (this will help prevent bruising)
- Wait at least 1 hour after treatment to apply makeup in order to allow your skin to breathe
- Avoid excessive facial expressions and strenuous exercise for 4 hours after your treatment (this helps the product to “settle” without disturbing the location where it was injected)
- Don’t rub or massage the area for 24 hours
It is common to have mild redness and swelling for 1-2 days after treatment. There is also a risk of bruising, which is only temporary and can be covered with makeup.
Combining Juvederm with BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is proving to be an ideal partner treatment with fillers. By using BOTOX® Cosmetic along with your Juvederm treatment, they’ll both last longer. Dr. Fitzgerald finds that many patients can stretch out the time between treatments when using these two products together.
Alternative Fillers to Consider
Some deeper creases, particularly deep nasolabial folds, are effectively corrected by Restylane Lyft or Radiesse. Radiesse has been shown to last up to 18-24 months.
When facial deflation or the natural loss of fat or bone support that comes with aging is a problem, then Dr. Fitzgerald may recommend Sculptra. Sculptra revolumizes areas that are imbalanced or have had fat loss and/or bone resorption. This filler can be used as an alternative to Juvederm Voluma.
Vertical lip lines can be smoothed with Restylane Silk if you prefer an alternative to Juvederm Volbella.
