How Do You Get Rid of Age Spots?

A close up of an age spot on a woman's face below her eyeAge spots, liver spots, or sun spots: whatever you call them, you probably don’t want them! Age spots aren’t actually directly caused by age. Instead, these patches of discoloration on your skin are caused by years and years of sun exposure. They may appear as you age, as the accumulation of sun damage is laid bare. The natural decline in cell turnover that occurs with age may also worsen the appearance of age spots.

Whatever your sun-related sins of the past, the fact remains that you may have age spots and would like to get rid of them. Depending on the location, size, and nature of the blotchiness, there is most likely a treatment at Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald’s practice that can reduce these spots:

Depending on the exact treatment, the pigmentation causing the age spot is targeted and reduced or eliminated.

Prevent Age Spots

Once you’ve achieved your refreshed, clearer skin with one or more of the services at our practice, we encourage you to take steps to prevent further discoloration and sun damage:

  • Seek shade, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the most direct
  • Wear an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every day
  • Wear hats, long sleeves, and long pants whenever possible
  • Wear clothing that is rated as UPF 40 or 50, particularly for running, hiking, boating, and other outdoor activities

The whole point of living in Beverly Hills or anywhere in Southern California is enjoying the sun year-round! We fully embrace the California lifestyle and everything that comes with it. Taking all or some of the precautions above is a good way to enjoy the sunshine while reducing the impact it has on your skin, your appearance, and your skin cancer risk. Dr. Fitzgerald is happy to provide customized tips for nourishing and protecting your skin with treatments and skincare products that you can use daily.
