Causes Of Age Spots

You may be really frustrated by the presence of age spots on your skin. Concealer is sometimes effective in covering up these pesky brown spots, but many people get frustrated by the need to use a concealer every day in order to experience even, unmarred skin.

Here are the contributing factors for age spots:

  • Sun exposure
  • Tanning beds
  • Tanning lamps

The main cause is sun exposure. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are the culprit. You may also be genetically predisposed to developing these spots. If you are at all concerned about any spots you see on your skin, you should visit your doctor. But true age spots are non-cancerous.

UV rays accelerate the formation of melanin. This is why you get a tan when you spend time in the sun. Melanin is the pigment in the upper layer of your skin that gives your skin color. Age spots form after years and years of sun exposure, which is why they often appear in middle-aged adults. The years of prolonged sun exposure causes melanin to clump together, thereby creating the appearance of a dark spot.
